Conrail took over the line in 1976 and SEPTA gained control in 1983. Electrification to Fox Chase was completed in 1966 with plans to extend it to Newtown, but funding was not available. The Philadelphia Newtown & New York became useless to the Pennsylvania and was taken over by the North Penn in 1879 which was under the control of the Reading Railroad by then. The line was completed in 1878, but it had failed in blocking the North Penn's line to New York. The Newtown Line north of Wayne Junction was built as the Philadelphia Newtown & New York Railroad by Pennsylvania Railroad to block the North Penn Railroad from building its own New York to Philadelphia line. The present Northeast Corridor alignment opened in 1872 and a year later the Philadelphia & Reading Railway bought the old alignment with a condition that it could not operate passenger service on the line. The Airport Line south of the Northeast Corridor was built as the original alignment of the Philadelphia Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad in 1838. The R8 Fox Chase was paired with the R8 Chestnut Hill West.
